THE TOWN OF MIDDLETOWN RECYCLING AND YARDWASTE GUIDELINES

Green Carts

Blue Carts

Mixed Paper

Mail and envelopes (staples and plastic windows are OK), magazines and catalogues, writing and legal paper, Phone books, paperback books, Hard cover books (remove covers) greeting cards, shredded paper, colored paper, computer paper, fax paper, wrapping paper (no waxy or foil), paper bags, Post-It notes, manila paper (file holders, etc.)

Metal Cans And Scrap Metal

Foil and pie plates, Aluminum and tin cans, glass jar lids, empty steel aerosol cans, empty latex paint cans, scrap metal, wire hangers, small appliances

Newspaper

All Newspapers, ads and inserts

Plastics

All plastic bottles and jugs with the 1 or 2 symbol on the bottom.

Cardboard

Boxes, and corrugated cardboard (smooth on outside, wavy in the middle)

Glass

Clear, green, and brown glass, examples: baby food and spaghetti sauce jars, wine and beer bottles.

Thin Cardboard (chip board)

Shoeboxes, cereal boxes, pastas boxes (including window), toilet paper and paper towel rolls, gift boxes, office supply boxes, cake mix boxes, toothpaste boxes, paper egg cartons.

Drink Cartons:

Milk and juice cartons, juice boxes, creamer and cream containers.
                          

Exceptions:
Metal: No scrap metal longer than 3 feet or heavier than 35 lbs, no aluminum aerosol cans, no oil based paint cans, no hypodermic needles.
Glass: No broken glass, no cups, dishes, glass windows, light bulbs, crystal, mirrors, ceramics or Pyrex.
Plastic: No plastic shopping bags, food wrappers, sandwich bags, Styrofoam, automobile fluid bottles, plastic bottles with the numbers 3 through 7 or plastic tubs such as yogurt butter or ice cream.
Paper: No paper towels, napkins, facial tissues, cigarette packs, candy wrappers, waxed or plastic coated paper, foil or tissue wrapping paper, refrigerated or frozen food boxes (including TV dinners and ice cream tubs).

Helpful Reminders:

  • Please rinse all cans and jars, plastic caps and lids should be thrown away, no need to remove labels.
  • A thin skin of dry latex paint inside the cans is acceptable.
  • All paper may be place loose in the carts, no need to bundle or tie.
  • Flatten all cardboard to save space in the truck.
  • Plastic shopping bags may be brought back to the store and placed in a recycling bin there.

Yard Waste – Place on curb in large paper bags, old trash barrels clearly marked YARD WATE, or in 4’ bundles. Yard waste in plastic bags will not be collected. Free ‘Yard Waste’ stickers are available at Town Hall. Christmas Trees should be free of decorations and left loose, not bagged or wrapped in netting.
