Friday January 10, 2020: Newport Naval Station closing Defense Hwy (aka Burma Road) for repairs

Naval Station Public Works will be filling potholes on Defense Highway (aka Burma Rd.) this Friday.
- It is CLOSING the road from JUST NORTH OF NUWC GATE 32 TO STRINGHAM Rd. (near Melville Boat Works area)
between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (+/- based on workflow).
Local traffic will have access to OTCN Fire Fighting and the Portsmouth Boat ramp only.
- Gate 17 to Gate 32 work will commence at approximately 2:30 p.m. and last for an estimated 30 minutes to 1 hour. This portion of the road will remain open for traffic but expect lane encroachment.
NOTE: WORK SCHEDULE AVOIDS PEAK-COMMUTING HOURS. Please avoid the road entirely, if possible, so that Public Works can work quickly and efficiently with minimum interference.
WINTER SPEED LIMIT:
EXCESSIVE SPEEDING ON THE ROAD CONTINUES TO BE A PROBLEM. WINTER WEATHER CAUSES POTHOLES AND THEY WILL BE APPEARING CONTINUOUSLY IN THE COMING MONTH. IF YOU SPEED AND HIT A POTHOLE YOU RISK A POSSIBLE ACCIDENT AND DAMAGE TO YOUR VEHICLE.
